Africa’s Clean Energy Transformation
Africa’s clean energy shift is surging. In the 12 months through June 2025, the continent imported more than 15 gigawatts of solar panels, a record-breaking volume that signals how quickly the energy transition is moving.
To put this in perspective: if installed and connected, 15 GW of solar could generate 22–26 terawatt-hours of electricity each year. That’s about two years of Kenya’s total power consumption, all added in just 12 months.
For policymakers and investors, the signal is unmistakable. It is that fossil fuel demand will decline faster than many expect. The UN has framed Africa’s renewable buildout as one of the greatest opportunities of our time, powering homes and industries, fueling growth, and building climate resilience.
