Coal Comes Crashing Down in the UK.

On August 14, 2025, a landmark moment unfolded in Nottinghamshire as eight colossal cooling towers at the decommissioned Cottam Power Station were demolished in a stunning, synchronized explosion, setting the record for the largest ever simultaneous demolition of such towers. The dramatic moment is captured in this BBC video. 

Cottam first came online in 1968 and was originally expected to run for just 30 years. Yet it continued operating, powering up to 3.7 million homes, until its final closure in 2019. This demolition marked a physical and symbolic end to the UK’s coal era.
