Australia’s Biggest Polluters. Now in High-Definition.
Thanks to the data platform OnlyFacts, we now have a sharper view of who’s driving Australia’s emissions, right down to the facility level. The tool allows users to compare across sites, sectors and companies, making it easier to see who is cutting emissions and who is leaning heavily on offsets instead.
The latest data paints a confronting picture. Iron ore production tops the list at 7.2 Mt CO₂-e, with Rio Tinto, Fortescue and CITIC leading the pack. Shell’s offshore LNG plant has been banking surplus credits, while Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo mine used offsets to cover an extraordinary 78% of its emissions (Source: OnlyFacts).
By breaking emissions down to the facility level, it becomes far harder for heavy polluters to hide behind aggregated numbers. Transparency, after all, is the gateway to accountability.
